HISTORY AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT HACKATHON
As part of the Decade of Science, Abai University hosted a scientific and educational hackathon titled "Historians' Alliance: History and Sustainable Development." The event aimed to promote the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and enhance student engagement in research related to global challenges.
The event commenced with a special exhibition and an insightful lecture by experts from the D.A. Kunayev Museum-House, part of the Almaty City Museums Association. The museum staff shared valuable data regarding Dimash Kunayev’s life and political career, specifically highlighting his contributions to science and his achievements as an engineer.
Seven teams competed for the top honors: "Farabi" (Al-Farabi KazNU), "Gasyr Uni" and "Shyraq" (KazNPU), "The Nomads of Kaskelen" and "Magzhan Sengen Zhastar" (SDU University), as well as "Aquinaq" and "Remontada" representing Abai University.
The first stage featured an interactive Kahoot challenge. Students answered questions on global environmental and social issues within the SDG framework. Success in this round depended on both knowledge and quick decision-making, with a real-time leaderboard fueling the competitive spirit in the hall.
In the second round, participants faced real-life scenarios. Students analyzed SDG-related cases covering ecological crises, access to quality education, gender equality, sustainable cities, and clean energy. Each team presented strategic solutions and creative projects. The jury highly commended the students' teamwork, logical reasoning, and innovative problem-solving skills.
The competition concluded with a "Poster Challenge" on the theme "The Future of Education Through the Eyes of Historians." Using handmade posters, participants showcased their unique perspectives on connecting history with the future and proposed visionary ideas for transforming the educational system.
Following the intense competition, the "Shyraq" team secured first place. Second place was awarded to "Magzhan Sengen Zhastar," and third place went to the "Aquinaq" team. All participating teams received certificates of recognition.
