SCIENTIFIC MEETING HELD IN HONOR OF THE 90TH ANNIVERSARY OF OMIRZAK AITBAYEV

A scientific and practical round table titled “The Role of Public Organizations in the Development of Science” was held at Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the prominent Kazakh linguist, Doctor of Philological Sciences, and Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan, Omirzak Aitbayev. The event was jointly organized by the International Kazakh Language Society and the Center for Expert Coordination of Philological Research. The meeting was attended by university leadership, well-known scholars, language advocates, and the academician’s relatives.

Omirzak Aitbayev devoted his life to the development of Kazakh linguistics and the strengthening of the state language across all areas of society. His research had a significant impact on the formation and development of national linguistics, particularly in the field of terminology. The academician continued the tradition of Akhmet Baitursynuly and elevated it to a new level. Over his lifetime, he published more than 500 scientific works, including over 20 monographs and textbooks.

The session was moderated by Karimbeck Kurmanaliyev, President of the Center for Expert Coordination of Philological Research, who highlighted the scholar’s academic and public contributions. The round table was opened by Bolat Tilep, Chairman of the Board and Rector of Abai University, who emphasized the significance of the anniversary and noted that the event was held as part of the Science Decade.

– The coincidence of Omirzak Aitbayev’s 90th anniversary with the Science Decade is symbolic. Science is the main driving force of societal development. Its progress depends not only on the work of scholars but also on the support of public institutions. In this regard, one of the key organizations contributing to the development of linguistic science is the International Kazakh Language Society. Figures such as Abduali Kaidar, Rabiga Syzdyk, Shora Sarybayev, Myrzatai Zholdasbekov, and Omirzak Aitbayev made invaluable contributions to its formation, – said the rector.

During the meeting, members of the academic community thoroughly discussed the scholar’s work in language policy, terminology, and the development of the Kazakh language as a language of science. Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan and President of “Kazakh Gazetteri” LLP, Dikhan Kamzabekuly, focused on the scholar’s public role and current issues in linguistics.

– Linguist Omirzak Aitbayev and Academician Abduali Khaidar devoted great effort to the Kazakh Language Society. They advanced science not only through research but also through active public engagement. Therefore, we too must work diligently to address scientific challenges, – he noted.

Academician Erden Kazhybek emphasized the scholar’s scientific principles and personal qualities, highlighting his historical role in systematizing Kazakh terminology. Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor Kalbike Yessenova analyzed current trends in the development of the Kazakh language and substantiated the relevance of the academician’s work in the digital age.

Additionally, scholars such as Anar Fazylzhan, Anar Salkynbay, and Zhanalyk Baltabayeva shared their views on pressing issues of the Kazakh language, emphasizing the importance of public organizations in coordinating scientific processes and expanding international cooperation. Bakhyt Kalymbet presented on the implementation of language policy in Almaty, noting the effectiveness of regional projects.

At the conclusion, participants stressed the need to systematically continue initiatives aimed at strengthening the link between science and society, improving the quality of research, and enhancing the status of the state language. The meeting went beyond a commemorative event and became a meaningful platform for discussing the future of the Kazakh language in the scientific domain.
