NATIONAL SPORTS – THE MIRROR OF THE NATIONAL SPIRIT

March 20 marks National Sports Day. The national sports games of the Kazakh people are an integral part of the nation's history and culture. Having evolved alongside the nomadic lifestyle, these games became deeply intertwined with the people's way of life and a vital tool for raising generations. National sports, which foster courage, agility, endurance, and ingenuity, have been preserved in the people's memory for centuries and continue to thrive today.

Every Kazakh sporting game is not merely entertainment but a tradition filled with deep meaning and educational value. For instance, Qazaq Kuresi wrestling is a symbol not only of strength and might but also of honor and bravery. In wrestling, both the physical power and the will and spirit of the wrestler are tested. Toghyzqumalaq is a unique game reflecting the intellectual culture of the Kazakh people. Often called "the chess of the steppes," it teaches calculation, patience, and strategic thinking.

Equestrian sports hold a special place among national traditions. Kokpar, a team game where riders compete for a goat carcass on horseback, requires bravery, teamwork, and quick decision-making. Similarly, Baiga is a reflection of Kazakh life, which is inextricably linked to horse culture. In addition to this race, which tests the endurance of both horse and rider, there are other traditional equestrian sports such as "Audaryspaq" and "Tenge Ilu."

Asyq Atu is one of the national games that has accompanied the childhood of Kazakh children for generations. Despite its apparent simplicity, the game teaches marksmanship and precision. Since 2021, international titles have been awarded for achievements in Asyq as a sport, proving its systematic development and international recognition. There is a folk proverb cautioning against getting too lost in games, the underlying meaning of which is that while games are a tool for upbringing and training, the primary goals of life remain labor and responsibility.

Today, various national sports in our country are developing at a new level. Numerous competitions are being organized, and interest in national games is growing, signaling a return to roots and a revival of national values. It is important to note that higher education institutions also contribute significantly to this development. Specifically, Abai University pays special attention to national sports. The university's students achieve high results in Qazaq Kuresi and Toghyzqumalaq at national and international competitions, winning prizes at various championships.

National sports are more than just games; they represent the people's worldview, a school of education, and a spiritual heritage. Beneath every game lie life lessons and the national character. Therefore, developing national sports is one of the most important ways to preserve the nation's culture. The government's designation of March 20 as National Sports Day within the "Nauryznama" decade is no coincidence, as the glorification of national sports elevates the national spirit.
