ABAI UNIVERSITY OFFERS NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE ELDERLY

Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University has launched a significant initiative aimed at expanding educational opportunities for senior citizens. On October 23, 2025, the university signed a memorandum with the "Active Longevity Center" of Almaty to jointly implement the "Silver University" project. This document established a partnership dedicated to supporting the older generation through education, increasing their social engagement, and strengthening their connection with society.

The "Silver University" is an international project for elderly citizens that has been successfully implemented in many countries worldwide. In 2025, KazNPU became a member of the "Kazakhstan Association of Silver Universities," elevating this work to a new level. The primary goal of the project is to provide modern education to citizens over the age of 55, develop their creative and social potential, and support an active lifestyle. Within the framework of the project, various faculties and departments collaborate to organize specialized courses, workshops, and educational lectures.

The initiative is managed by the "Education Management School" center with the support of the university’s teaching staff. This project arose from the social need to mitigate the effects of aging and to foster a greater interest in lifelong learning among seniors. It allows participants not only to acquire knowledge but also to remain active within social, cultural, and digital environments.

Several educational courses have already been successfully completed or are currently underway. One of the first courses was organized by the Department of Informatics and Informatization of Education in November and December. During the classes, participants learned how to use digital technologies in their daily lives, exploring various mobile applications, smartphone structures, and modern ecosystems. Following the practical sessions, participants were awarded special certificates for mastering mobile technology.

Another successful program was initiated by the Department of Biology, focusing on "Indoor Plant Care and Design Elements." Participants over the age of 60 attended an eight-hour course in December, where they learned the fundamental principles of plant maintenance and how to arrange them harmoniously within an interior. Currently, an English language course is being held for 30 participants and will continue until April. Students are divided into beginner and intermediate groups to develop their linguistic skills step by step.

Looking forward, the university plans to expand the scope and enrich the content of the project. Future programs will focus not only on intellectual growth but also on the physical and emotional well-being of the participants. For instance, starting in April, the Faculty of Physical Education and Initial Military Training will launch special health and development courses. These sessions will aim to increase physical activity and promote a healthy lifestyle among the older generation, contributing to an overall improvement in their quality of life and vitality.
