Prospective plans for the protection of UNESCO cultural heritage in Kazakhstan were discussed in Almaty

The second meeting of the working group on the protection of historical and cultural heritage of Kazakhstan, protected by UNESCO, was held at KazNPU named after Abai, Kazpravda.kz reports


The meeting was chaired by the Minister of Culture and Information of the Republic of Kazakhstan Aida Balayeva.


The event was attended by deputy akims of regions, representatives of central government agencies, members of the National Commission of the Republic of Kazakhstan for UNESCO and ISESCO, as well as scientists, archaeologists and representatives of public associations.


The participants discussed draft action plans aimed at improving measures to protect intangible cultural and world heritage, as well as the implementation of the UNESCO Memory of the World international program.


Aida Balayeva noted the importance of fulfilling the obligations stipulated by the UNESCO Conventions. She emphasized the need for coordinated work at all levels and the importance of attracting qualified experts to train personnel in the skills of identifying and developing intangible cultural heritage.


"We need to strengthen our work, first of all, to improve the qualifications of specialists. It is important that the training is meaningful and useful. “There is an urgent need to prepare training modules and begin conducting courses at the regional and central levels,” the minister said.


Deputy Chairman of the National Committee for the Protection of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Kazakhstan Rustam Muzafarov, Chairperson of the World Heritage of Kazakhstan Gulmira Mukhtarova and Chairperson of the National Committee for the UNESCO Memory of the World Program Gaziza Nurgaliyeva presented their work plans to the participants.


The plans include advanced training for local government specialists and representatives of ethnocultural associations, management of World Heritage sites in Kazakhstan, inventory, research and popularization of intangible cultural heritage, as well as the preparation of new nominations.


The participants exchanged views and identified priority areas for further work.


The meeting concluded with a discussion of the implementation of the proposed measures, coordination of efforts of all stakeholders and the development of a specific set of measures to protect the cultural heritage of Kazakhstan.
