CULTURAL DIALOGUE BETWEEN KAZAKHSTAN AND CHINA: KAZAKHSTANI ART AT THE SILK ROAD FESTIVAL
On 15–16 October 2026, Xi’an hosted events within the “China–Central Asia 2026” scientific, technological and cultural exchange programme, alongside the opening of an international art exhibition as part of the 12th Silk Road International Arts Festival. These events brought together representatives of science, education and the arts, providing a platform for advancing cooperation between Kazakhstan and China.
Professor Liu Wenbin, who has devoted more than thirty years to researching Central Asian art and developing international cultural ties, made a significant contribution to coordinating Kazakhstan’s participation. Through his initiative and coordination, works by members of the Union of National Designers of Kazakhstan were presented at the Silk Road International Arts Festival for the first time.
On 15 October, Professor Liu Wenbin participated in the “China–Central Asia” event. Scholars, university representatives and young researchers from China and the five Central Asian countries discussed opportunities for cooperation in science, education, archaeology and the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage. Particular attention was given to fostering connections among young people and strengthening intercultural dialogue.
During his visit, Professor Liu Wenbin delivered a lecture at Xi’an International Studies University on aesthetic trends in the cinema of the independent Central Asian states. Drawing on internationally acclaimed films, he explored issues of national identity, historical memory and humanistic values.
Ahead of the exhibition’s opening, Professor Liu Wenbin met with Xu Mingfei, Vice Governor of Shaanxi Province. They discussed prospects for artistic exchange between Kazakhstan and China, the development of arts education and support for young talent.
On 16 October, the 12th International Invitational Exhibition, “The Art of the Silk Road Today,” opened at the Shaanxi Museum of Fine Arts. The Kazakhstani artworks and design pieces on display introduced international audiences to national artistic traditions and their contemporary interpretations.
For the Faculty of Arts at Abai University, developing cultural dialogue with Chinese partners is of particular importance. Such initiatives create opportunities for joint exhibition projects, academic exchanges and cooperation in arts education. The Faculty expresses its gratitude to Professor Liu Wenbin for his contribution to promoting Kazakhstani art and strengthening creative ties between the two countries.
