Today marks the birthday of Sanzhar Asfendiyarov, an outstanding statesman and public figure who served as the first rector of what is now Abai University. To commemorate this significant date, a ceremony was held at the pantheon in Zhanalyk village, Almaty Region, where participants paid tribute to this distinguished son of the nation and laid flowers at his grave. The event was attended by representatives of the intellectual community, scholars, and students, led by Bolat Tilep, Chairman of the Board and Rector of Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University, and Marat Shoranov, Head of S. Asfendiyarov Kazakh National Medical University.

The purpose of this solemn gathering was to honor the legacy of this remarkable figure and highlight his invaluable contribution to the history of the country and the development of science and education. The event also aimed to introduce the younger generation to his exemplary life and historical legacy, fostering patriotism and respect for national values. Particular emphasis was placed on his educational and enlightenment activities and his historic role in the establishment of Kazakhstan’s higher education system. This meaningful initiative seeks to honor distinguished historical figures, strengthen the continuity between generations, and preserve the nation’s spiritual heritage.

Speaking at the ceremony, Bolat Tilep, Chairman of the Board and Rector of Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University, reflected on the history of the university and the remarkable individual who laid its foundations.

“Sanzhar Asfendiyarov was instrumental in establishing two national universities that today hold well-deserved positions in international university rankings. The distinguished name, stature, professional achievements, and contributions of this outstanding son of our nation will never be forgotten. During his lifetime, he said, ‘When will a truly prosperous era come for the people? It will come only when society is rich in educated people.’ The names of such remarkable figures must remain an enduring example for future generations. This is precisely our purpose today,” said Bolat Anapiyauly.

Marat Shoranov, Chairman of the Board and Rector of S. Asfendiyarov Kazakh National Medical University, also delivered a heartfelt address during the memorial ceremony, highlighting Sanzhar Asfendiyarov’s contributions to the development of higher education in Kazakhstan as the first head of Abai University.

It is worth noting that Sanzhar Asfendiyarov was the first rector of Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University. He contributed to the establishment of the institution in 1928 and led it from 1929 to 1931. His name deserves particular recognition for the tremendous efforts he made to establish and develop one of the country’s first higher education institutions. His revered name is inscribed in golden letters in the university’s history.

Fluent in Arabic, Persian, English, and French, Sanzhar Asfendiyarov was not only a prominent educator and a gifted scholar but also an outstanding statesman and public figure. He devoted himself wholeheartedly to organizing the university’s activities and personally contributed to the admission of its first students. He also played an invaluable role in developing the institution’s educational and material infrastructure and ensuring that it was equipped with textbooks and qualified teaching staff.
