ABAI UNIVERSITY SCHOOL TEXTBOOK AUTHORS DELIVERED LESSONS AT A SECONDARY SCHOOL
The faculty members of Abai University continue to deliver lectures and lessons at secondary schools. The scholars’ latest sessions were held at Secondary School No. 42 in A. Tokpanov village, Ili District, Almaty Region. As part of the “Lesson with a Scholar: University Research for School Students” project, school textbook authors conducted a series of seminars and lessons.
The event aimed to integrate the academic and methodological expertise of university scholars into secondary education and introduce effective approaches to teaching the Kazakh language and literature. The lecture was delivered by Bidana Kabatay, Associate Professor at the Department of Kazakh Literature and Teaching Methodology named after Academician S. Kirabayev, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, a renowned scholar and specialist in teaching methodology, and author of the Literary Reading textbook for primary school students. The lecture was also delivered by the authors of the Kazakh Language and Literature textbook for secondary schools: Raigul Rakhmetova, Professor at the Department of Theory and Methodology of the Kazakh Language and Doctor of Philological Sciences, and Aizhan Yussup, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Kazakh Literature and Teaching Methodology named after Academician S. Kirabayev and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
The university scholars conducted seminars and lectures for teachers and students in Grades 9 and 10. The sessions focused on setting appropriate learning objectives, designing effective short-term lesson plans, ensuring alignment between learning objectives, assignments and assessment, and applying contemporary approaches to literary text analysis. The participants also explored ways of identifying an author’s central idea, analysing character systems and artistic details, and assessing students’ learning outcomes.
The lectures went beyond theoretical instruction and incorporated practical tasks and interactive discussions. Students worked with texts, practised expressing and supporting their ideas, analysed learning materials and drew conclusions. Schoolteachers raised topical questions related to lesson planning and assessment and received academic and methodological recommendations from the scholars.
The meeting with textbook authors and scholars in teaching methodology increased the students’ interest in the Kazakh language and literature and helped them approach the learning material from a deeper academic perspective. The project also strengthened cooperation between the university and the school and created opportunities for teachers to exchange professional experience.
It should be noted that Abai University scholars had previously held a meeting at Al-Farabi School-Gymnasium No. 145 as part of the “Lesson with a Scholar: University Research for School Students” project. The project primarily aims to engage school students in research, strengthen cooperation between higher and secondary education institutions, and create opportunities for teachers to exchange professional expertise.
