SPECIALISTS SHAPING CHILDREN’S SOCIAL WORLD PUT TO THE TEST

A cognitive and practical competition titled “The First Step Together” was held among first-year students majoring in Social Pedagogy at Abai University. Organized to enhance future professionals’ knowledge, develop their ability to analyze social and pedagogical situations, and build teamwork skills, the event provided students with an opportunity to connect theoretical knowledge with practical experience.

Who is a social pedagogue? The answer to this question cannot be limited to a single definition. A social pedagogue is a specialist who helps children adapt to society and build positive relationships with their families, schools, and peers. They study a student’s social environment, identify potential difficulties at an early stage, and carry out preventive measures to address them.

Social pedagogy focuses on children’s social development and upbringing, as well as the formation of their place and role in society. Therefore, in addition to pedagogical knowledge, this profession requires the ability to listen to people, establish communication, assess social situations, and propose effective solutions.

Today, the relevance of this field continues to grow. A child’s social environment is no longer limited to the family and school. The expansion of the digital space has created new forms of interaction among peers. Bullying and cyberbullying, social isolation, conflicts within the family, and difficulties in relationships with peers can affect a child’s socialization. In such circumstances, the work of a social pedagogue is closely connected not only with addressing existing problems but also with preventive measures aimed at preventing them from arising.

Alongside professional knowledge, empathy, responsibility, patience, communication skills, and the ability to work as part of a team are essential qualities for a social pedagogue. This is because the specialist works not only with the child but also in collaboration with parents, teachers, classmates, and, when necessary, other professionals.

The “The First Step Together” competition was designed to help students develop these professional skills. The participants were divided into three teams and answered questions related to the key concepts and principles of social pedagogy. They also analyzed specific situations and explored possible solutions to the social and pedagogical issues presented. The tasks assessed not only the students’ theoretical knowledge but also their ability to substantiate their opinions, exchange ideas, make collective decisions, and work collaboratively with their team members.

Another distinctive feature of the competition was the active participation of the audience. Students who observed the participants completing the tasks gained additional insights into the content of social pedagogy and the professional responsibilities of a future social pedagogue.

For first-year students, the competition was an opportunity to learn more deeply about their chosen profession and experience its requirements through practice. For a social pedagogue, however, the first step always begins with understanding people.
