FIELD LECTURE AND GUIDED TOUR AT THE TAMGALY ARCHAEOLOGICAL COMPLEX

On 21 September 2026, Said Edilevich Galimzhanov, PhD and Senior Lecturer at the Department of Design of the Faculty of Arts, organized a field lecture and guided tour at the Tamgaly Archaeological Complex.

The event was attended by fourth-year students of the 6B02120 Graphic Design educational programme, as well as second- and third-year students enrolled in the shortened study programme 6B02125 Design (Graphic Design). The field class was conducted for both Kazakh- and Russian-language groups as part of the course “Graphic Language and Visual Culture.”

During the tour, the students visited the Tamgaly Museum, two Bronze Age burial grounds and the territory of the ancient sanctuary. They attended a lecture on the history of research into the Archaeological Landscape of Tamgaly, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as its historical and cultural significance and the structure of the archaeological complex.

Particular attention was given to the spatial organization of the Bronze Age sanctuary. The students were introduced to scholarly hypotheses concerning its possible function as an ancient amphitheatre in Central Asia. Scientific explanations were also provided regarding the subjects, visual characteristics and semantic content of the petroglyphs located within the sanctuary.

The event enabled the students to deepen their knowledge of historical and cultural heritage, develop professional skills in analysing ancient visual systems and reinforce their theoretical knowledge of graphic design within an authentic historical environment.
