SEMINAR ON YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH HELD IN ASTANA
A preventive seminar was held at the Institute of Education of Abai University in Astana. Focusing on the topic “Strengthening Youth Mental Health by Promoting the Value of Life,” the event was aimed at safeguarding young people’s mental health, strengthening their emotional well-being, and preventing suicidal behavior.
Student life is an important stage in a person’s professional and personal development. This period can be particularly challenging for first-year students who are taking their first steps into a new social environment. Factors such as adapting to university life, entering a new social circle, academic workload, interpersonal relationships, and concerns about the future can significantly affect the emotional well-being of some young people. At such times, providing them with psychological support is particularly important. Early identification of psychological difficulties is also an important area of preventive work with young people. Organized for this purpose, the seminar was held over two days and provided students with comprehensive information on the subject.
First-year students enrolled this academic year took part in the event held at the Institute of Education. The seminar covered such issues as developing students’ awareness of health, promoting the value of life, explaining the importance of seeking psychological assistance in crisis situations, and preventing suicidal behavior. Saida Kosbai, Head of the University’s Psychological Support Service and a practicing psychologist, spoke about the concept of mental health, emotional resilience, managing stress and psychological pressure, strategies for overcoming difficult situations, the importance of interpersonal support, and developing a culture of seeking psychological assistance.
Students received scientifically grounded information about the psychological characteristics of suicidal behavior, risk factors, and the key principles of preventive support. The importance of not overlooking emotional difficulties, paying attention to significant changes in a person’s behavior, and seeking professional assistance when necessary was also emphasized.
During the preventive seminar, students asked questions about psychological support, behavior in stressful situations, and ways of overcoming difficulties. They received clear and well-founded answers supported by practical examples.
For the university, safeguarding students’ mental health is an important prerequisite not only for their academic success but also for their personal and social development. In this regard, preventive activities in this area will continue in the future.
