MAIN GOAL – BECOMING A RESEARCH UNIVERSITY

Abai University is one of the leading educational institutions in pedagogical education and science in the country. In recent years, the university has systematically strengthened its scientific potential, significantly increasing the number of master's and doctoral students, the volume of research projects, and the effectiveness of dissertation research.

One of the university's strategic goals is transitioning to a research university model. The main indicator of this process is increasing the volume and quality of training scientific personnel. Yertay Sultan, Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation at the university, stated that systematic work is being conducted in this direction, and the number of students has increased.

– One of the important steps toward becoming a research university is increasing the number of doctoral and master's students. Abai University has been taking confident steps in this direction. Over the past three years, the number of doctoral students has multiplied, reaching 605 people today. This year, 206 grants were allocated for doctoral studies. Currently, 18 dissertation councils operate at the university, – says Yertay Sultan.

For example, while 57 doctoral students studied in 2024, their number has now reached 605. That is, the contingent has increased 10-fold. Among them, 206 researchers are studying in their 1st year, 211 in their 2nd year, and 188 in their 3rd year. Accordingly, 18 joint dissertation councils operate at the university. They have concluded 27 contracts with research institutes in the country. This makes it possible to combine scientific research with practice and enhance the professional and research potential of doctoral students.

Last year, 78 scientists were awarded PhD degrees, including 26 researchers who came from other higher education institutions. In the first half of 2026, 60 candidates successfully defended their scientific degrees. As a result, a total of 138 new scientists stepped into science.

The scope of the university's research projects is also expanding. This year, with the support of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, 33 research projects were implemented. In addition, 40 intra-university projects were funded at the university's own expense. To introduce scientific developments into practice, 15 startup projects dedicated to industrial commercialization and supporting innovative initiatives continue their work.

Furthermore, the scientific potential of Abai University is complemented by a qualified faculty. The institution employs 10 academicians of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, 18 research professors, and 26 postdocs. It is worth noting that 35 scientists from the university have joined the international expert rosters of Scopus and Web of Science.
