MONTESSORI PERUGIA SCIENTIFIC LABORATORY TO OPEN AT ABAI UNIVERSITY

Abai University and the world’s first Maria Montessori International Centre in Perugia, Italy, have signed a framework cooperation agreement. According to the document, the parties have agreed to establish Kazakhstan’s first Montessori research laboratory and a national teacher certification center based at Abai University. Initiated during a visit by a delegation led by Rector Bolat Tlep, this landmark partnership aims to systematically integrate cutting-edge global practices into training the next generation of teachers and expanding inclusive education across the republic.

On the cusp of its centennial anniversary, Abai University is implementing a large-scale transformation program into a new type of research pedagogical university. Introducing internationally recognized methodologies is a top priority, driven by the growing interest in this educational system within Kazakhstan. Today, Montessori principles are applied in more than 40 preschool institutions and educational centers across 11 cities nationwide; however, scaling this experience further requires a fundamental academic foundation and the training of qualified specialists.

Key areas of collaboration were outlined during negotiations with the President of the Italian Centre, Simone Pavoni, and Vice President Lucio Lombardi. These include developing joint educational programs that offer students international AMI certificates, training educators under the "train-the-trainer" model, and conducting scientific research in early childhood development, neuropedagogics, modern educational technologies, and gerontology. Furthermore, Abai University expressed strong interest in the Silver Agri Age and Silver Agri Care projects, which focus on supporting and engaging the elderly.

The official delegation from Abai University toured the center’s practical infrastructure, visiting the Lidia Celi Nursery, a kindergarten, and an elementary school. Bolat Anapiyuly emphasized that the university arrived in Italy to build a long-term academic partnership, noting that the synergy of international expertise and scientific research will unlock new opportunities for scholars, students, and future generations.

This visit is part of a broader European tour by the Abai University delegation aimed at expanding academic ties. The itinerary also includes meetings with leading Italian partner universities, including Sapienza University, UniCamillus, and LUISS.
