OUR STUDENT BECAME THE WINNER OF A REPUBLICAN COMPETITION
A student of Abai University became the winner of the Republican
Competition of Research Works. A total of 26 students from 11 higher education
institutions across the country participated in the academic competition in the
field of Chemistry. Dilnaz Serikkyzy, a student of the Faculty of Natural
Sciences and Geography who significantly outperformed her competitors, was
awarded a First-Degree Diploma of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
At the Republican Competition of Student Research Works, students
enrolled in the “B01512 – Chemistry” educational programme at universities
across Kazakhstan presented their best projects. The expert commission
comprehensively evaluated the participants’ studies based on scientific
novelty, relevance, and practical significance.
According to the competition results, the project of Dilnaz Serikkyzy, a
fourth-year student of the “Teaching Chemistry in English” educational
programme at the Department of Chemistry of Abai University, was recognised as
the best. Her research work entitled “Developing Environmental Culture among
Grade 9 Students through Project-Based Learning Based on the Sustainable
Development Goals in Chemistry Education” received the highest award of the
competition. Her academic supervisor is Senior Lecturer Onglasyn Kulumbetova.
The research addresses one of the key challenges of the modern education
system – the development of environmental culture among school students. The
project was conducted using the Action Research methodology and underwent
practical testing at the Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Physics and
Mathematics in Almaty.
During the study, the stages of planning, action, observation, and
reflection were systematically implemented, and the obtained results were
analysed from a scientific perspective. The findings demonstrated that
project-based learning integrated with the Sustainable Development Goals within
Chemistry education has a positive impact on the development of students’
environmental culture.
It should be noted that Action Research is a continuous research process
conducted by practitioners themselves to solve specific problems in their
professional practice and improve their work. It focuses not on theory, but on
enhancing everyday professional activities. Currently, graduating students of
Abai University are defending their theses in the Action Research format. This
undoubtedly contributes to the development of practical skills among future
teachers.
