Abai University –the golden cradle that gave me a ticket to my art – Ramazan Stamgaziev, People’s Artist of Kazakhstan

My first major school on the path of art was the Republican Variety and Circus Studio in Almaty, where I studied from 1987 to 1989. In this sacred institution, I was mentored by People’s Artist of Kazakhstan Kairat Baibosynov and immersed myself deeply in national art. The example of my teacher and his dedication to art had a profound impact on my creative destiny.

In 1989, I was accepted to work at the “Kazakhconcert” association. For a young performer, this was both a great trust and a huge responsibility. During that time, I worked in the famous “Zhazira” ensemble led by People’s Artist of Kazakhstan and State Prize laureate Nurgali Nussipzhanov. Together with the ensemble, we toured across the country, met audiences, and passed the school of the big stage.

However, along my artistic journey, I realized that practical experience alone is not enough—professional education is equally important. Therefore, in 1990 I entered the newly opened music faculty of what was then KazPI. The greatest advantage for me was the possibility of distance learning, as we had very frequent tours. Despite this, I never interrupted my studies: several times a year I came to the university, took exams, and continued to develop my knowledge.

At first, I was admitted in the specialty of “kui” and studied in the dombra department. Later, at the invitation of Kairat Baibosynov, I transferred to the vocal department and fully defined my artistic path. In 1995, I completed my studies. During that time, KazPI was transformed into Abai University, so my diploma began as an institute diploma and ended as a university one. I sometimes joke: “Perhaps I am the only one with such a diploma.”

Abai University is not just an educational institution for me; it is a sacred place that opened the way to my professional life. We were taught by highly qualified teachers. Even in distance learning, their strictness and care constantly inspired us to strive for growth. We participated in concerts and scientific-creative events, combining art and education.

In those years, Medeu Arynbaev studied with me, and later talented artists such as Zhanar Aitjanova, Gulmira Akurpekova, and Marhabat Myktybekov, the soloist of the “Konyr” group, also graduated from this institution. This is only a part of Abai University’s contribution to Kazakh art.

Today, I perform on the same stage with colleagues who graduated from the Kurmangazy Kazakh National Conservatory and the Zhurgenov Academy of Arts. I believe that the education and upbringing I received at Abai University allowed me to stand alongside them and earn the love of the people.

For 17 years, I toured the country with the “Zhazira” ensemble, performing for the people. Those journeys became a true school of life for me, helping me understand the real value of art. And the institution that gave me confidence and wings for my creative path is the Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University.

Therefore, wherever my name is mentioned, the name of Abai University is always mentioned alongside it. Because this institution is inseparably connected with my artistic destiny—my golden foundation.
