POLISH CENTER TO OPEN AT ABAI UNIVERSITY
A delegation from Abai University paid a working visit to the University of Pomerania in Słupsk, Republic of Poland, where they held important negotiations aimed at strengthening bilateral academic and cultural-humanitarian cooperation. The main purpose of the visit was to expand partnerships in higher education, develop cultural ties, and implement new joint initiatives.
During the visit, the official delegation led by Bolat Tilep, Chairman of the Board and Rector of Abai University, and Maksat Zhakaу, Vice-Rector for Social Development, reached significant international agreements. According to a letter of intent signed with Rector Zbigniew Osadowski of the University of Pomerania, a Polish Language and Culture Center will be established at Abai University. This center will deepen cultural dialogue between the two countries and provide students with opportunities to learn the Polish language and gain a comprehensive understanding of Polish culture.
The parties also discussed increasing academic mobility, implementing joint research projects, and systematically developing the exchange of educational experience. Representatives of both universities expressed confidence that this partnership will be long-term and productive. The working visit is expected to give new momentum to the development of academic and cultural relations in the international education space.
It is worth noting that cooperation between the two universities dates back to 2012. That year, scholars from the Faculty of Philology at KazNPU visited the University of Pomerania for the first time, laying the foundation for academic relations. In 2015, a formal cooperation agreement was signed. Since then, more than 200 students, master’s students, and doctoral candidates from Abai University have studied or completed internships at the University of Pomerania.
One of the most important areas of cooperation is dual-degree education. In 2017, a joint bachelor’s and master’s dual-degree program was launched based on Abai University’s “Russian Language and Literature” program and the University of Pomerania’s “Russian Language in Business and Tourism” program. As a result, students study at both universities and receive internationally recognized diplomas. To date, 28 European-style diplomas have been awarded to Abai University students, with five more students expected to graduate this academic year.
In the future, the scope of cooperation between the two universities is planned to expand further. New dual-degree programs are expected in fields such as biology, geography, pedagogy, arts education, music, and physics. In addition, the partners plan to implement joint research projects, co-supervise doctoral candidates, increase academic mobility, and continue collaboration within the framework of the Erasmus+ Programme.
