TASKS HAVE BEEN SET TO DEVELOP A READING CULTURE

The Decree of the Head of State Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on the development of a reading culture in the country serves as a key guideline for advancing national education and spiritual development. In implementing this state task, the Scientific Library of Abai University plays an important role. Today, this structural unit operates as a major information and intellectual center equipped with modern digital technologies, serving the training of future teachers.

According to the Presidential Decree “On measures to develop a reading culture and form an intellectual nation,” tasks have been set to develop human capital and strengthen the intellectual and cultural potential of society. Promoting a reading culture as a core element of education, upbringing, and enlightenment has been identified as a priority direction of state policy aimed at forming a creative and competitive nation.

In this regard, the Scientific Library of Abai University is a modernized center that meets contemporary requirements and provides students with access to scientific electronic databases. All necessary conditions have been created here for students and young researchers to gain in-depth knowledge and conduct diverse scientific research. Spacious reading halls, quiet and comfortable workspaces undoubtedly inspire motivated youth toward scientific pursuits.

The library’s collection includes about 700,000 volumes covering all fields of knowledge. Among them is a rich collection of world literature and rare editions from the 18th–20th centuries. The value of the library is not limited to rare collections; its main asset lies in the works of the university’s scholars and faculty members. Textbooks, methodological guides, and fundamental monographs authored by professors form the core of the scientific collection contributing to the development of national pedagogy.

The university library has fully transitioned from a traditional format to a modern digital space. Free access has been opened to electronic catalogs and global scientific databases. In particular, the IRBIS64+ automated library system, the J-IRBIS web module, and 104,943 bibliographic records are available to users.

Director of the Scientific Library Nurgul Imansydykova noted that the Presidential Decree will give new momentum to the development of library services. She emphasized that important tasks have been assigned to librarians in shaping public awareness and promoting a reading culture.

– The Decree clearly outlines priority areas for the development of library services and digital systems. The formation of a reading culture is, above all, a great mission entrusted to us—librarians as facilitators of knowledge. A librarian is not just a profession but a golden bridge between the reader and the world of knowledge, a spiritual guide. Therefore, we will dedicate all our efforts to enhancing the intellectual potential of the younger generation, – said Nurgul Zhaylaukyzy.

When the intellectual strength of educators is combined with the modern capabilities of the library, it undoubtedly leads to the formation of enlightened and forward-thinking individuals. A nation that embraces books will always thrive, and its future will be bright. Abai University is always at the forefront on the path to a prosperous future.
