EAST AND WEST: THE INTERSECTION OF LANGUAGE, CULTURE AND TRANSLATION
On April 23, an international scientific and practical conference titled
“Languages and Cultures in the Space of East and West: Issues of Philology and
Translation” commenced at Abai University. The academic gathering aims to
comprehensively discuss the interaction of languages and cultures in the
context of globalization, as well as current issues in translation studies.
The main
theme of the conference is the linguistic and cultural dialogue between Eastern
and Western civilizations, new directions in philological research, and modern
approaches to translation practice. Language is not only a means of
communication but also a cultural code and a reflection of national worldview.
From this perspective, the high-quality translation of texts across languages
and the accurate transmission of cultural specifics remain among the most
pressing issues in both theory and practice.
During the
plenary session, the interconnection between languages and cultures was
analyzed from a scientific standpoint, and key issues in translation theory and
practice were identified. The impact of modern technologies on the translation
process was examined, along with issues related to the development and
adaptation of terminology in a multilingual environment.
One of the
presentations in the section sessions focused on the translation of neologisms
and pseudo-scientific terms in science fiction into the Kazakh language. This
study highlights the complexity of adapting new words and concepts from
contemporary literature into a national language. The author emphasized the
importance of semantic accuracy and cultural equivalence in translation.
Additionally, a study analyzing Kazakh fairy tales from thematic, structural,
and value-based perspectives underscored the relevance of reinterpreting
national folklore through modern scientific methods. This research demonstrates
the role of language in preserving national worldview.
Another
important research area addressed the interpretation of symbolic images in
folklore texts as elements of a national code. This topic highlights the
importance of symbols in intercultural communication. A presentation comparing
numerical phraseological units in Arabic and Kazakh aimed to identify
similarities and differences in linguocultural codes. Such studies contribute
to understanding shared cultural foundations between languages.
Research
related to Turkic languages was also presented to the audience. For example,
reports on field studies of Uyghurs in Kazakhstan, singular and plural forms in
the Nogai language, and microtoponyms in the Tuvan language raised актуальные
issues in Turkology.
One of the
key issues discussed among researchers and experts was the training of
translators in the digital age. Modern technologies, including machine
translation systems, significantly influence the professional activities of
translators. In this regard, the possibilities and limitations of machine
translation, as well as interpretative factors, were examined. Special
attention was given to the adaptation of engineering terminology in three
languages (English–Russian–Kazakh). In translating scientific and technical
texts, maintaining consistency and clarity in the terminological system is
essential.
Issues of
literary translation were also addressed. Presentations on translating
linguocultural units from modern English into Russian, strategies for conveying
authorial vocabulary, and the role of emotional idioms in literary texts
demonstrate that translation is not only a linguistic but also a cultural
process.
This conference became an important platform for discussing актуальные scientific issues in philology and translation studies. The presentations revealed new dimensions of the interaction between languages and cultures and provided direction for the future of translation practice. In conclusion, the conference results once again confirmed the importance of interdisciplinary connections in modern science. Language, culture, and translation form a closely interconnected complex system, opening new prospects for future research.
