ABAI UNIVERSITY – A LEADING SPIRITUAL CENTER IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE KAZAKH BOOK

April 23 is World Book and Copyright Day. It has been celebrated since 1995 by UNESCO. It is known that since last year, this day has also been observed in our country as National Book Day. This year, it was joined by Kazakhstan Librarians’ Day, established on October 24, 2022. These combined celebrations hold special significance for the country’s first higher education institution – Abai University.

This sacred institution has made an invaluable contribution to the development of Kazakh books and the formation of the national knowledge base. A book is the spiritual memory of a nation, while scholarly work is the intellectual force that systematizes this memory and moves it forward through time.

Every textbook, monograph, and research work is not only the product of an individual author but also the outcome of an entire scientific school and national intellectual thought. Therefore, discussing scholarly works promotes not only science but also the values that shape the nation’s spiritual development and future direction.

Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University is the spiritual center of Kazakh science and pedagogical thought. With nearly a century of history, it continues the enlightenment traditions established by the Alash intellectuals. The scientific and educational legacy of figures such as A. Baitursynuly, S. Seifullin, Kh. Dosmukhameduly, T. Zhurgenov, and M. Gabdullin has become the foundation of modern university science.

One of the key pillars of this spiritual and scientific tradition is the University’s Scientific Library. Today, its collection includes over 700 hundred publications. It contains educational, methodological, scientific, and literary works in Kazakh, Russian, and foreign languages, encyclopedic editions, as well as rare valuable works dating back to the 17th–19th centuries.

This rich heritage serves as the main informational base for research and the educational process. The authored books of Abai University’s scholars and graduates contribute significantly to the country’s spiritual modernization.

For example, a prominent figure in Kazakh spirituality, academician Rabiga Syzdykova, deeply studied Kazakh linguistics from a historical and theoretical perspective and made a major contribution to the development of its scientific foundations.

In literary studies, academician Serik Kirabayev holds a special place. He systematized the history of Kazakh literature and scientifically substantiated the patterns of literary development, raising the national literary school to a new level.

This scientific tradition continues in modern pedagogy. Many scholars develop theoretical and methodological foundations of education, contributing to the formation of new pedagogical directions. Their works are actively integrated into the educational process.

Scholars of Abai University make a significant contribution to the intellectual development of the country. Among them are:
Mambet Koigeldiev in history,
Alma Abilkassymova and Korlan Zhampeisova in pedagogy,
Yermek Boribayev and Zhanna Khamzina in law,
Vladimir Kosov in physics,
Fauziya Orazbayeva in linguistics,
Abdumaulen Berdyshev and Bakhytzhan Akhmetov in mathematics and technical sciences,
Ulzharkyn Abdigapbarova in education management.

They are not only authors of hundreds of scientific works but also founders of their own scientific schools and mentors of a new generation of researchers.

Abai University is not only an educational institution but also a center of scientific thought. The scientific schools formed here are interconnected and continuously advance the country’s intellectual development.

The Scientific Library and the works of scholars come together as a unified intellectual system of knowledge and science.

Today, the library is also developing inclusive initiatives. Special technologies and a typhlo-complex for readers with special needs clearly demonstrate equal access to knowledge.

The modern Scientific Library is the memory of the past, the support of the present, and a beacon for the future. Every book here is silent history, and every reader is a seeker opening new paths to knowledge.

Thus, Book Day is not just a celebration, but an important occasion that renews thought and spirit and helps realize the value of knowledge.

From this perspective, the Scientific Library of Abai University and its scholars are the golden foundation of the nation’s spirituality.
