OPENING CEREMONY OF THE INTERNATIONAL SPRING SCHOOL
The Sorbonne-Kazakhstan Institute of Abai University hosted the official opening ceremony of the International Spring School on International Relations, organized in collaboration with the National Institute for Oriental Languages and Civilizations (INALCO). The ceremony was attended by the Consul General of France in Almaty, Maxime Gehringer, the Cultural and Cooperation Attaché of the French Embassy, Sébastien de Courtois, diplomat Thomas Nadjar, the Director of the Sorbonne-Kazakhstan Institute, Ainur Sabitova, Professors Catherine Poujol, Sébastien Colin, Agnès Bousset, and students from INALCO.
This project between INALCO — a world-class institution based in Paris offering over 100 languages — and Abai University marks a new milestone in their strategic partnership in education and science. As part of the Spring School, 14 students arrived from France: 12 specializing in international relations and two in linguistics and literature. This visit provides a unique opportunity for international youth to explore the cultural and linguistic heritage of Central Asia firsthand in Kazakhstan.
The event commenced with a video message from the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of France to the Republic of Kazakhstan, Sylvain Guiaugué. The Ambassador highlighted Kazakhstan's pivotal role in Central Asia, encouraged students to engage in active discussions, and noted the strategic importance of diplomatic ties between the two nations. Consul General Maxime Gehringer emphasized that Kazakhstan is a reliable partner for France in education, science, and economy. Furthermore, Sébastien de Courtois urged the students to seize this opportunity to discover the country by engaging with the faculty and students of Abai University.
INALCO has been one of the most significant historical partners of the Sorbonne-Kazakhstan Institute since its inception. Director Ainur Sabitova stated that the Spring School is not merely an academic event but a fruitful result of bilateral cooperation. Renowned historian Professor Catherine Poujol described the project as a manifestation of open dialogue and donated valuable books on international relations to the Abai University library. Professor Sébastien Colin highlighted INALCO's 40-year history in teaching international relations and expressed confidence that this school would greatly benefit the students' future diplomatic careers in the region.
A key highlight of the event was the signing of a Letter of Intent between Abai University, INALCO University, and the INALCO Foundation. This document elevates academic ties to a new level, paving the way for joint research projects and expanded academic exchange opportunities.
In the second session, doctoral students from the Faculty of Philology at Abai University conducted an introductory Kazakh language lesson for the French guests. The lesson integrated AI-driven tools, gamification, and national traditions. At the conclusion, active participants received traditional Kazakh souvenirs. The Spring School will continue with various scientific seminars and cultural activities in the coming days.
